NCSP® AI 600-1 Awareness Certificate

Course Description

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), published as AI 600‑1, provides a structured, flexible, and outcomes‑based approach for managing risks associated with artificial intelligence systems. It supports organisations in designing, developing, deploying, and governing AI in ways that are safe, secure, trustworthy, and aligned with organisational and societal values.

The NCSP® AI 600‑1 Awareness Certificate is a half‑day, instructor‑led course offering a concise introduction to the purpose, structure, and strategic value of the NIST AI RMF. Designed for executives, managers, and stakeholders, this course explains how the AI RMF supports governance, risk management, assurance, and responsible AI practices, without requiring technical or model‑development expertise.

Participants gain a high‑level understanding of the AI RMF Core, the Governance and Risk Functions, the Characteristics of Trustworthy AI, and how organisations can use the Framework to guide safe and responsible AI adoption.

What You Will Learn

Participants gain essential awareness‑level knowledge of NIST AI 600‑1. You will learn:

  • The purpose, structure, and evolution of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.

  • The characteristics of trustworthy AI, including safety, security, fairness, and accountability.

  • The AI RMF Core Functions: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage.

  • How AI risk differs from traditional cybersecurity and operational risk.

  • Organisational roles and responsibilities in AI governance and assurance.

  • How the AI RMF aligns with CSF 2.0, RMF (800‑37), and broader digital trust frameworks.

Course Agenda

Module 1: Introduction to NIST AI 600‑1 & Trustworthy AI Principles

  • A high‑level overview of the NIST AI RMF, its purpose, and its role in supporting safe and responsible AI. Introduces the core characteristics of trustworthy AI, including validity, reliability, safety, security, resilience, accountability, transparency, and fairness.

Module 2: The AI RMF Core - Govern, Map, Measure, Manage

  • An awareness‑level introduction to the four AI RMF Core Functions:

    • Govern - organisational policies, oversight, and accountability

    • Map - understanding context, intended use, and risk sources

    • Measure - assessing AI risks, impacts, and system behaviour

    • Manage - implementing controls, monitoring, and continuous improvement

Module 3: AI Risk, Roles & Organisational Responsibilities

  • A concise overview of AI‑specific risks, including bias, drift, misuse, emergent behaviour, and systemic risk and the organisational roles involved in managing them. Covers leadership responsibilities, model owners, developers, evaluators, and governance bodies.

Module 4: Applying the AI RMF in Practice; Alignment, Use Cases & Continuous Improvement

  • An introduction to how organisations apply the AI RMF to real‑world AI systems. Covers alignment with CSF 2.0, RMF (800‑37), privacy frameworks, and digital trust initiatives.
