(NCSP®) 800‑88 Foundation Certificate

Course Description

Improper disposal or reuse of media can expose sensitive information. NIST SP 800‑88 provides authoritative guidance for sanitizing media across its lifecycle.

The NCSP® 800‑88 Foundation Certificate is a 2‑day, instructor‑led course introducing participants to the principles and practices of media sanitization as defined in NIST SP 800‑88. This course explains sanitization methods, verification processes, and alignment with NIST CSF 2.0.

Participants learn how to apply foundational sanitization concepts across systems, devices, and operational environments, preparing them for more advanced NCSP® operational security training.

What You Will Learn

Participants gain knowledge of NIST SP 800-88 and how organizations and system owners can develop, implement and maintain a media sanitization program. You will learn:

  • How NIST SP 800‑88 aligns with NIST CSF 2.0 and supports secure media handling.

  • The core concepts of media sanitization and lifecycle management.

  • How to select sanitization methods (clear, purge, destroy).

  • How to verify sanitization effectiveness.

  • How to manage media reuse and disposal.

  • How to integrate sanitization into operational processes.

Course Agenda

Day 1: Media Foundations, Governance & Sanitization Concepts
Module 1: Introduction to NIST SP 800‑88
Module 2: Core Media Sanitization Concepts
Module 3: Governance, Roles & Policy Responsibilities
Module 4: Media Types, Risks & Sanitization Methods

Day 2: Verification, Disposal & Continuous Improvement
Module 5: Sanitization Execution & Verification
Module 6: Media Reuse, Disposal & Documentation
Module 7: Monitoring, Reporting & Operational Metrics
Module 8: Continuous Improvement & Alignment with NIST CSF 2.0

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain how NIST SP 800‑88 supports NIST CSF 2.0 and secure media handling.

  • Describe sanitization methods and lifecycle concepts.
